79 I haven't read a Kathleen Baldwin book in awhile. When this popped up in my recommended I couldn't resist. I liked the characters.... To a point. Kate was all over the place. Her fiance had humiliated her at a party/ball/dance by calling her a henpecking shrew and calling off their engagement in front of everyone. She had been very nitpicky, but this feels like something that could have waited. No consequences were given to him. She was the bad guy. She was supposed to just forgive him after being told she was too much and wasn't wanted. A lot of what she went through hit a little close to home for me. She finally gets a chance to have a break from being a mother to her sisters, and they invite themselves along and continue to complain about her to her face. Even her ex invited himself along. They get into mishaps and some guy who knows her aunt threatens her ex with a gun to the face, she slams his arm down and he pulls the trigger anyway; her fault. Her aunt drugs her because her nerves are shot and she sleeps and wakes up frantic because her sister is in a carriage with a rake; she's overreacting. She wakes up later that day to said rake calling for her permission to court said sister so she scrambles to get dressed and doesn't look dignified enough for the dozen gentlemen she didn't know were there or the upper crust friend of her aunt who just makes constant jabs at her; her fault.She gets accosted by a strange man at Almack's because her aunt wants to spend some alone time in the carriage with an old friend and throws bad guy over the railing and he nearly pulls her down with him and doesn't make good enough impression on all the dazzling people after he lies and says she rescued him so her reputation isn't damaged; her fault. She can't properly explain how she is scared to get married because of how her mother died. Her fault, but kind of deserved. Also deserved was how flip floppy she was about her ex. I'm sorry, but that was a horrible thing. And she was the injured party, but instead of groveling and begging her forgiveness it seemed like everyone just wanted her to get over it because he was her only option. Which ended up not being true. But she went along with it. She never once tried to stand up for herself. She just took all of the abuse everyone, except her father, heaped on her. There were some tear jerky moments and the aunt is beyond annoying, but there were a lot of good parts that make me happy to see this series back in action.
